Decade of Change: Here are the biggest newsmakers in Bay Area business

Michael Covarrubias

Covarrubias is the type of developer other real estate leaders wish they could be -- or at least do business with. After about a quarter of a century with TMG Partners, Covarrubias has risen to be not just a beacon in the real estate community, but in the broader region as well. The firm he leads has more than three decades of developing housing, office, industrial and retail space in the Bay Area and is now art the helm of some high-profile projects. The firm expects to break ground in 2020 on an 875,00-square-foot office tower in Oakland without any tenants in hand. At the same time, TMG is working with biotech giant Alexandria Real Estate Equities to revamp the never-occupied 6x6 shopping mall in San Francisco. His team partnered with Grosvenor to bring housing to a former California Pacific Medical Center site on San Francisco's west side, where it is notoriously difficult to get projects approved. By serving on the boards of regional development groups including the Bay Area Council and the Urban Land Institute and co-chairing the Metropolitan Transporation Commission's "Committee to House the Bay Area," or CASA, he has harnessed his experience, vision, and deal-making skills to address major challenges such as housing unaffordability, transportation gridlock, and how to accommodate rapid job growth.
